Killing Fields Choeung Ek Cambodia   2 comments

While in Cambodia I took two tours, one was the s-21 genocide museum which I wont post photos from and the other was the killing fields at the village of Choeung EK.  A UN investigation estimates at least 2 to 3 million people were killed but it could be even more. The tour is done on foot with head phones explaining the areas where you walk. Such sad events in what seems a peaceful place. the small field I looked over has humps in it from where they have dug up mass graves. A commemorative  stupa is filled with the skulls of the victims at the Killing Field of  Choeung EK which is one of many sites but the best known one being the site of a Buddhist memorial to the victims. The memorial park has been built around the mass graves of thousands of victims, most who were executed after being taken from the s21 prison. We were told  bones and clothing surface after heavy rain due to the large number of bodies still buried in shallow mass graves. It is not unusual to come across the bones  of the victims scattered on the surface as you walk around the park. If these are found, you are are asked to notify a memorial park officer or guide. I found this a very sad but informative part of my trip to Cambodia, sad to see but important to never forget

here are a few photos

  1. “If we do not learn from history, we are condemned to repeat it.” words which are so relevant to this current post Julie. Very moving and emotive images.

  2. Thanks Andrea, very true
